Parking
Perhaps no one else has noticed this, but it is getting really difficult to find a parking space on the streets near Tide Point.  It seems as either the Tide Point lots fill up or the Tide Point workerbees find it too difficult and too far to actually park in thier own lot and take that long arduous quarter mile walk to their office when plenty  of free available parking can be found, well, in front of my house.

By 8:30AM there is not a space to be had.  I think long and hard before getting into my car and driving anywhere since I know I will not be able to place my car near my house again until after 5:30PM.  Please don't throw any rocks at my house for this suggestion, but it is time that ole Locust Point start thinking about permit parking.   I'm about ready to do the lobbying of everyone in the neighborhood and get the necessary signatures myself to make this a go.

Mind you, I am very excited about the completion of Loop Road and hope that it will take the pressure off of the local parking situation.  The new road looks very pretty and all, but I don't see CSX doing anything about completing their portion of the project.  If CSX is true to form, by the time CSX does anything about putting in a street crossing at the tracks we will be at the turn of the next century.

Input and feedback appreciated, or I take the bull by the horns myself.

Re: Parking

As the mother of three small children in the 1200 block of Hull, I have just about reached a breaking point regarding parking and speeding and unsafe driving in the area.

When the whole Tide Point thing started it got a little tougher to park but now with all the new construction (work trucks taking up multiple parking places), it is absolutely impossible to find parking.  I often find after a morning trip to the grocery store, I am unable to park.  I have elderly and disabled neighbors who are parking 3-4 blocks from their long time residences.   The permanent, long time, ever increasingly taxed residents of Locust Point deserve parking within some proximity of their homes.  The businesses in the area need to arrange for park and rides for their employees to allow for resident parking.  We must petition or whatever needs to be done for permit parking.  I am pretty sure every resident on my block will sign a petition for permit parking without hesitation.  Is the parking permit issue something that I need to contact the city about or is this an issue that needs to be initiated by the civic association?

As for the speed and unsafe driving, we need a stepped up police prescence in the area of the school and along Hull Street due to Tide Point (?) employees blatent disregard for the safety of our residents and children.  The crossing guard at Fort and Hull, Ms. Theresa,  places herself in danger every day to protect our children and their parents from drivers speeding up to get through red lights, turning while children are crossing the street, etc.  I can only assume these drivers have no children.  I am forever signaling for drivers to slow down along my block and despite the fact that I am unloading babies from my van, I am rewarded with rude gestures and displays of even more speed and unsafe driving. There is an obvious lack of respect by drivers who only come to work in this still primarily residential neighborhood.  Maybe if the police started increasing tickets for speeding and safety violations the word would get out to drive more slowly and safely in our neighborhood.

I am requesting help in addressing these situations.  I would like to know what I can do before something tragic occurs.

As an LP resident and a worker at Tide Point, I spend a lot of time walking between my house and Tide Point.  It just so happens this path is directly through the parking lot.  While there are plenty of spots before 9:30 am or so, if you arrive to Tide Point after 10am (as many work shifts do), there are often no spots left in the lot.

So, some Tide Point workers park outside the lot because they are lazy.  However, many park outside the lot because these are the only spots left.

The solution to this problem lies in Streuver Brother's construction of the parking garage (next to Domino's) that they've talked about for so long.

Unfortunately, dealing with excessive speed in our neighborhoood will never be a high enough priority to police unless there is a major casualty at some point.  Enforcement in the State and City is generally very lax and this does not hlep our neighborhood's situation. I find it difficult to understand how speeds in excess of 30-40 MPH are even something people can do...I'm very uncomfortable driving over 15 MPH down most of our streets because of the tight quarters. I also keep it to 25 MPH on Fort Avenue (posted limit).

As far as the parking is concerned, the permits angle does seem like an option, but has anyone talked to the property management at Tide Point? I have heard that they are giving employees at the companies notice that they should not be parking outside of the permit parking area for the building, but I don't know to what extent they have done this. If anyone hasn't worked with the Tide Point people I think that angle should be taken first, just because there may be a simpler solution to working with the property managers then getting permits.

We have our own parking issues down here on the Fort Ave. side with all the new buildings going in and Pazza Luna re-opening (they have valet parking now, which makes things very interesting).  This will be alleviated somewhat when the buildings are finished since the houses all have garages and deck space, and I'm sure the people with the kind of money to buy those houses don't want their Lexus out on the street with the rest of us.

Talking to the property management at Tide Point?  Um, I doubt they care.  Their business is renting out office space and keeping the tenants happy, I am sure they don't care one bit about the neighborhood.  Right now it is perfectly legal for Tide Point employees to park in Locust Point, so they do because it is convenient as nobody wants to ride a bus from over at the Merritt.  There is no way to pinpoint who owns which vehicle, especially if they remove their Tide Point tag off their rear view mirror.

As far as the new homes are concerned, I suggest you take a walk down the back alleys of Steward and David Streets.  You see, those big brand new homes DON'T have basements.  So the new owners put all their "stuff" in the garage and park their cars on the street, since there is no parking pad or driveway.  The new homes on Decateur and Hull don't have basements either,  so expect their cars to be on the street as well.  I have noticed that the new homes on Decateur are finished but don't have occupants, but those spaces directly in front of their houses are filled.  Um,  LP is about to have a problem!

The Civic Association is doing a wonderful job with the barbeque but maybe it is time for the organization to get some teeth and do something about an issue that affects almost everyone.  Permits, people, permits.
